The artistic production course “Lieber Maler, male mir… (Dear Painter, paint for me…)”[1] opens the investigation of contemporary commissioning in the art field. As the avant-garde idea of autonomy loses its topicality, the question of commissioning is increasingly discussed in today’s context of contemporary art.

Various forms of cooperation between artists and employers will be carefully considered in order to understand the complex apparatus and critical potential of the artist positioning.

The course explores a wide range of issues and scales of commissioning models: from public institutions to private foundations and collections. Their backgrounds will be accessed through interdisciplinary research, conversations with collectors, gallery owners, curators or city authorities, as well as through the analysis of selected videos, essays and artistic practices. Based on the continuing discussion, the participants will expose several self-determinated cases.
