Learning from Leaving Las Vegas

In a way, the title of this lecture poses a multiple logical negative. First of all, it will not be about Las Vegas. It certainly won’t even touch upon the novel and/or movie Leaving Las Vegas, nor its thematic framework of alcoholism and prostitution. To a degree it will be concerned with the seminal book Learning from Las Vegas, but critically so. The departure from the things learned from Las Vegas will bring us to contemporary Belgrade. Through a few examples of the use of commercial mega-banners that envelop some major modern buildings in the city we shall wiggle our way through some notions of public space, architecture and the urban in today’s hegemonic political and economic circumstances.
