Exhibition practices –as any form of social and even so creative space– are regulated. How does the charm of so-called „artistic freedom“ go hand-in-hand with policies, protocols and regulations? Where and when does it meet the „naysayers“? How to approach „feasibility“ and what does that even mean in the light of the Austro-German sense of order and the norms of standardization by which warnings are regimented in an exhibition place and public space?
Aside from providing basic knowledge on exhibition practice, the course will touch on some of the critical ideas behind acronyms like DIN, ÖNORM and ISO (with self-proclaimed 22520 international standards) and furthermore focus on according protocols of museums and galleries, which do tell much about dis/agreement with the notion of creative procedures and artistic production.
