OUTSTANDING ARTIST AWARD 2017 - Innovative Kulturarbeit
project House of Open Gates/ Narratives from the Arrival City. Steirischer Herbst 2016
The House of Open Gates has created a temporary space of inclusion in the city of Graz, gathering actors and participants from different sectors of society. The appropriation and transformation of the Volksgarten Pavillion in a space of cheerful conviviality and solidarity was made in a process throughout the year, involving different initiatives and organisations, including IZK students of the course “Encounters”, Design of Specialized Topics, conducted by Daniela Brasil in the Summer Semester 2016. Newcomers from Syria and Afghanistan have participated in the classes, and together with the students developed forms of verbal and non-verbal dialogues, which then were captured into embroideries and cushions to furbish the House of Open Gates with lived memories. The House of Open Gates was located in the Volksgarten, underlining the hidden potential this public space has in becoming a place for encounters and respectful dialogues within social and cultural diversity.
